Hugo Lagerstam – A Focused Pursuit of the World Stage
Hugo Lagerstam is a 22-year-old elite canoe sprinter from Löddeköpinge in southern Sweden. Specializing in K2 and K4 over 500 meters, he is steadily establishing himself as one of Sweden’s most promising athletes in the sport. While his home base is shared with his family, his girlfriend, and their two dogs, much of his year is spent abroad—around 150 days annually—at training camps and competitions. At the time of writing, he is in Spain, preparing for the upcoming season.
Alongside his athletic career, Hugo works part-time at Max Matthiessen and co-runs a training business with his sister, who is also an elite-level canoeist. Balancing high-performance sport, work, and entrepreneurship requires structure and discipline—qualities that define his everyday life.
His achievements already reflect a strong competitive profile. Hugo has claimed Nordic Championship gold in both K2 200 meters and 500 meters, secured multiple Swedish national titles, reached the final at the U23 European Championships in K4 500 meters, and placed 14th in K2 500 meters at the 2025 World Championships. Off the water, he brings a touch of personality to his profile: he is vegetarian, enjoys a good fika, and remains unconvinced by fruit in desserts.
A Winter of Setback and Progress
The road to this season has not been without challenges. At the end of last season, Hugo suffered a herniated disc, which significantly shaped his winter training. Rehabilitation has been a central focus, with particular emphasis on strengthening his core and rebuilding his body in a sustainable way.
At the same time, this period has provided an opportunity to further develop his physical capacities. He has gradually returned to paddling and is currently training around 16–17 hours per week. Approximately 4.5 hours are dedicated to strength training, while the remaining time is divided between endurance work and time on the water. As the season approaches, higher-intensity sessions—focused on speed and lactate tolerance—are becoming increasingly prominent.

Nutrition as a Performance Tool
For Hugo, nutrition is not just about health—it is a key performance factor. He views food as fuel, essential for both sustaining training load and optimizing performance. What is considered “healthy” for an elite athlete often differs from common perceptions; for instance, fast carbohydrates such as candy can play a strategic role around high-intensity sessions.
His primary focus is ensuring sufficient energy intake to match the demands of his training. In addition, he uses supplements to support performance and recovery. His routine includes creatine, sports drinks during longer or more intense sessions, iron supplements (due to his vegetarian diet), and protein powder after workouts. Together, these elements help maximize the return on every training session.

Eyes on the Olympic Pathway
Looking ahead, the main focus is on the Olympic qualification period, which begins in the 2026 season and continues through to 2028. Key milestones along the way include World Cup events, European Championships held across Europe, and World Championships in Canada.
With a solid track record, a structured approach, and a clear long-term vision, Hugo Lagerstam continues his pursuit of excellence—aiming to take the next step and establish himself at the very highest international level.
